FORGIVENESS

"When you've lived through genuine abuse, the hardest thing you hear from other Christians is “You have to forgive". When the world teaches you what Forgiveness means, it usually sounds a lot like:

Let them off the hook scot-free, and formally vow to pretend it never happened. No setting boundaries, and no showing you've lost trust, because that's bitterness, and above all, you must never obstruct the avenues which allow them to hurt you again and again whenever they want. And you must ‘forgive’ them again and again, each time.

This was my biggest hangup as a Christian. Where was accountability? Where was repentance? Why was I expected to let all of this continue happening to me, while knowing full well that they would never show me a fraction of the same grace for even my smallest mistakes? I knew we must have it all wrong.

That's when I was reminded: Romans 12:19 says “Do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, ‘Vengeance is Mine, I will repay’ says the Lord”.

On Judgement Day, they will give account for every sin and unrepentance to a God who is not swayed by lies or excuses, and face His perfect judgement. They just might hear "Depart from me, I never knew you". This is what I needed to take to heart in order to finally let go." ~Sammy J.
